World Peace Leaders: Photographs by Rick Carter

February 25 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
FREE

Visit the galleries at the Liriodendron from February 8 through March 31 to see the World Peace Leaders exhibit by photographer Rick Carter. The exhibit presents a powerful photographic record of global figures who have shaped movements for peace, justice, and human dignity. Through intimate and iconic portraits taken in partnership with the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, Carter captures the moral force and human presence behind decades of peace leadership of such luminaries as Bishop Desmond Tutu, His Holiness The Dalai Lama, Jane Goodall, Harry Bellafonte, and Queen Noor of Jordan.

The exhibit opens on Sunday, February 8 from 11 am to 3 pm, with the artist giving a special talk at 1 pm. The photographs will be on view Wednesdays from 1 to 5 pm through March 31, and on Sunday, March 8 from 11 am to 3 pm. Private viewings may also be scheduled by contacting us at 410-879-4424 or info@liriodendron.com.

Please note that, due to the historic nature of the Liriodendron, the 2nd floor galleries require climbing stairs.

About the Artist

Rick was born in Washington D.C. in 1949, and his family moved here to Bel Air in 1960. He attended Bel Air schools, and graduated from Bel Air High school in 1967. He was drafted into the military in 1969, yet he signed up for an additional year to receive extended training with the Army’s Special Forces (Green Berets). His tour of duty in Vietnam was 1971-’72. Returning home, Rick attended Harford Community College, playing on the Owls football team for two years, while also photographing the various sports teams. This helped to encourage him in the interest in the art of photography, which began when he enjoyed photographing his family gatherings. He attests to being the shy one in his family, and found it more fun to catch everyone else in their antics than to participate. This later developed into intentionally looking for emotion and personality traits in portrait photography.

In 1980 Rick moved to Santa Barbara, CA where he received additional instruction in photography, and began his work as a professional photographer for over forty years. He captured the richness of the city, of its ocean, landscapes, residents, tourists and celebrities that swarm to Southern California for its beauty and charm. A number of his works appeared in the local newspapers and magazines, and have garnered top prizes in judging exhibitions. Rick’s decision to return to his roots, was to be nearer his family, and to celebrate life where his love of photography first began.

“Within this exhibit, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and photograph some extraordinary people. As you walk through and stop and read their biographies you’ll be moved, as I’ve been, at their dedication to making this a better world, free of nuclear weapons. It’s with special gratitude I wish to thank the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to help document their ambitious goal to abolish nuclear weapons.”
