SUMMARY:Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra: Overcoming Adversity Through Music: A Holocaust Memorial Concert
DESCRIPTION:The concert will begin with film music: selections from Sea Hawk by Erich Korngold\, conducted by Brian Folus. Baltimore violinist Yonatan Grinberg will perform two short works for violin solo and orchestra: German Jewish Holocaust victim Robert Dauber’s ‘Serenade’ and John Williams’ popular and moving theme from ‘Schindler’s List’. Mendelssohn’s music to Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ was especially loved in Germany in the late 19th and 20th centuries but banned in Nazi Germany. Finally\, the moving Cello Concerto by Polish-Jew Mieczyslaw Weinberg is a moving document and at times incorporates Jewish folk\, Klezmer-like sounds and will be performed by Lawrence Stomberg. DESCRIPTION:48th Season in 2024-2025: Awaken to the SSO’s 48th Season! \nThe SSO’s 48th season opening concert is mostly about waking up in one way or another. Bach’s very famous “Sleepers Awake” cantata is a fitting introduction to the concert\, while the first of Haydn’s London Symphonies includes a loud flatulent in the third movement! The waltz from Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet\, “Sleeping Beauty” is also a proper addition\, as is the fabulous orchestral suite from John Williams’ “The Force Awakens”. SUMMARY:A Snowman's Holiday with SSO
DESCRIPTION:Join the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra for their popular Holiday concert which will include some of the usual SSO shenanigans and surprises. \nThe first half of the concert is devoted to snowmen! Delight in Erich Korngold’s overture from “The Snowman” and Howard Blake’s popular story and music from the BBC’s 1984 film “The Snowman\,” which will be read and sung by our guest Carolyn Black-Sotir\, a longtime friend of the SSO. \nThe SSO will celebrate and remember the life of SSO trombonist Donald Raff\, who produced many fine arrangements for them and also wrote the SSO’s program notes for many years. Amongst many holiday favorites\, we will present a new arrangement of “Carol of the Bells” by SSO percussionist Welles Still\, who arranged the work in memory of his wife April.
