DESCRIPTION:Their voices and careers paths were markedly different\, but no one would dispute that Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald were the two preeminent vocalists of American jazz. Billie Holiday\, the tragic heroine of jazz history\, who’s voice is recognizable from the first syllable. Ella Fitzgerald\, who’s almost superhuman voice and improvisatory skill has yet to be matched. Classic recordings\, vintage video clips\, and live performances from the lecturer will keep this class lively and swinging! Lecture series led by Seth Kibel. \nThe lecture series will be held on Mondays\, October 21 and 28\, 2024 from 9:45-Noon each day (there will be a short break). Participants only need to reserve a spot for 10/21 and you are welcome to come to one or both dates. This series is made possible through the Bel Air Arts and Entertainment District with a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. \nAdmission is FREE\, but reservations are required. \nHeld at the Bel Air Armory\, 37 N. Julie Kurzava looks at their early success and career milestones\, focused on their story\, style and substance. Learn the history of their collaboration and discover the musical characteristics that form their signature style. \nMay 20\, 2024–Week 3: Cole Porter \nIndiana born and heir to millions\, Cole Porter was an Ivy League graduate\, European bon vivant\, and incidentally one of the great composers of American musical theater and popular song. Learn more about his entrance into the Broadway world\, musical style and his distinctive point of view. \nJulie Kurzava is a versatile performer who has worked professionally throughout the Mid Atlantic in theater\, concert and opera. A classically trained singer\, she is a graduate of Northwestern University (BM) and the Peabody Conservatory (MM). Ms. Kurzava is co-founder and Executive Director of New Moon Theater\, a touring theater for young audiences. Formerly a faculty member of the Peabody Road Scholar program\, she is a popular lecturer on Musical Theater and the American Songbook. Ms. Kurzava is currently on the music faculty at Loyola University Maryland.

Drop ins for lessons are NOT available. \n6-7pm–Beginner American Foxtrot: A beautiful and romantic dance\, the foxtrot is composed of simple walking steps and side steps. \n7-8pm Beginner American Cha Cha: The cha-cha dance originated from Cuba and was originally known as the cha-cha-cha.
