The musicians will also demonstrate how the instruments sound and how lovely music can be when instruments are played together.\nFeb 21—Circus ScienceJoin professional knucklehead and silly scientist Gregory May on a tour of the scientific principles behind his circus skills. As a former Ringling Brothers Circus performer and Port Discovery Children’s Museum educator\, Gregory uses juggling\, rolling globe walking\, lasso spinning\, and other amazing tricks to explore Newton’s Laws\, Gyroscopic Motion\, and Center of Gravity.\nFeb 28–Jazz for People Who Are Shorter Than Me!Seth Kibel and his fellow musicians will demonstrate what makes jazz musicians tick — improvisation\, self-expression\, and a whole lotta fun! Familiar melodies will be “jazzed” up with saxophone\, flute\, clarinet\, piano\, and more\, including selections from Seth’s award-winning childrens’ album “Jazz For People Who Are Shorter Than Me.” Attendees will learn to scat sing\, carry a beat\, improvise their own melodies\, and more! SUMMARY:Clarinetists of the Swing Era: A Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Once upon a time\, the clarinet occupied a central role in this music we call jazz\, especially during that brief period known as the “Swing Era\,” roughly late 1935 until the end of World War II\, when jazz and popular music were one and the same. We will explore the lives\, careers\, and personalities of Benny Goodman\, Artie Shaw\, Woody Herman\, as well as their lasting impact on jazz history. In doing so\, we will examine a multitude of issues in the history of American music during the 20th century. Recordings\, videos\, and live performance all keep this class lively and engaging. \nThe lecture series will be led by Seth Kibel and will be held on Wednesdays\, November 12 and 19\, 2025 from 9:45am-Noon each day (there will be a short break). Participants only need to reserve a spot for Nov 12th and you are welcome to come to one or both dates. This series is made possible through the Bel Air Arts and Entertainment District with a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.

SUMMARY:First Ladies of Jazz: Ella Fitzgerald & Billie Holiday
DESCRIPTION:Their voices and careers paths were markedly different\, but no one would dispute that Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald were the two preeminent vocalists of American jazz. Billie Holiday\, the tragic heroine of jazz history\, who’s voice is recognizable from the first syllable. Ella Fitzgerald\, who’s almost superhuman voice and improvisatory skill has yet to be matched. Classic recordings\, vintage video clips\, and live performances from the lecturer will keep this class lively and swinging! Lecture series led by Seth Kibel. \nThe lecture series will be held on Mondays\, October 21 and 28\, 2024 from 9:45-Noon each day (there will be a short break). Participants only need to reserve a spot for 10/21 and you are welcome to come to one or both dates. This series is made possible through the Bel Air Arts and Entertainment District with a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. \nAdmission is FREE\, but reservations are required. \nHeld at the Bel Air Armory\, 37 N. Main Street in Bel Air.
