LOCAL SCOUT MANAGES LITTLE FREE LIBRARY

Two years ago, the Bel Air Cultural Arts Commission (CAC) purchased a Little Free Library for installation at Plumtree Park on Thomas Street to serve its visitors and the Howard Park neighborhood. Initially, the CAC members maintained the library by collecting books and replenishing it every other week to make sure books were accessible to the community.

In May, 2019 Kaylee Snyder, from Scouts BSA Troop 1920, approached the CAC about opportunities to serve in the Town of Bel Air. Subsequently Kaylee agreed to assume responsibility for the maintenance of the Plumtree Park library for a six-month period. She collected books from friends and developed a partnership with Caprichos Books of Bel Air. She dutifully tended to the library weekly to make sure it was well stocked.

In a report to the CAC the following October Kaylee provided an analysis detailing which seasons the library was busiest and what types of books seemed most popular. At the end of the six months, Kaylee agreed to continue her service with the library.

Unfortunately, the library was vandalized this past May. It had to be removed from Plumtree Park by the Town Department of Public Works. Kaylee reported the incident and offered to help rebuild it. With assistance from her grandfather, Rick Snyder, repairs were made to straighten the hinges and roof, cut thicker plexiglass to replace the broken window, upgrade the latch to a self-closing one, and install a spring so wind wouldn’t catch the door and damage the small structure. In addition, she repainted it and stocked it with new books.

“It’s inspiring to see young people like Kaylee want to give back to the community,” said Kristien Foss, CAC chair. “She epitomizes what it means to be a Scout and citizen. We’re very grateful for her service.”
